Overview

With WhatsApp, you can send text or voice messages, photos, videos and text files, make voice and video calls. You can also create group chats with up to 240 participants or make a group call, voice or video, with up to 8 people. Since all of the messages and calls in WhatsApp are made using the device’s Internet connection, in case your device is offline, the app will save the messages you receive and give you a notification when the connection renews. All the messages in WhatsApp are protected of end-to-end encryption. As for contacts, those can be exported from your phone’s contact list. Since the profile is linked to your mobile number, there’s no need to make up an original ID. It is possible to have a username, though, as well as the status.

Message managing features

In WhatsApp, you not only can check if your message was delivered and read, but also know the exact time both of those events happened. In case it seems bothersome, you can just turn off read receipts in a particular chat. It’s also possible to delete the message during the first hour after sending. If you need to add more expressiveness to your text messages, animated sticker packs will come in handy.

Additional features

You can control the amount of data usage by choosing which types of media files would be downloaded automatically in the situations when you are using mobile data, roaming, or wi-fi. It’s also possible to make multimedia files from particular groups invisible in the gallery and to protect access to the app with a fingerprint lock. You can also backup chats onto Google cloud or sent the entire chat with or without multimedia via email. Note, though, that backed-up messages are not protected by end-to-end encryption.

Total score 9.5/10

WhatsApp Messenger would be useful for everybody who needs to connect with a lot of people via mobile messaging or calls. Features like fingerprint lock or hiding multimedia in the gallery seem useful in terms of personal privacy. Overall, the interface is quite convenient, but the absence of a built-in function for muting all notifications in one click sometimes feels annoying.

Highlights

  • Group video call function
  • Sending chats via email
  • Making multimedia invisible in the gallery
  • Fingerprint lock

Pitfalls

  • No function for muting all notifications at once
